Recent Events: "Torture and Medical Ethics"
March 5: Speaker,
David A. Rothstein, M.D., Chicago psychiatrist and Amnesty
International member, with a longtime interest in the question
of
medical ethics and human rights issues.Since the 9/11/01 terrorist
attacks, some in the U.S.
government and many American citizens regard torture as a
viable weapon for the
United States to employ in the "War on Terror."
Concerned by the government's
resort to torture in many documented instances, David Rothstein
raises
a crucial ethics and human rights question: How should the
medical and
psychology communities respond to requests for their members
to
participate in the torture process? To answer this question,
Dr. Rothstein
presented highlights from "Terrorism and Medical Ethics:
Conflicting Loyalties
for American Psychiatrists," a paper he presented at
the annual meeting of
the American Psychiatric Association in May 2006 in a session
on Ethics and
Human Rights. In his presentation he examined the issue from
many
angles, including Amnesty International's position that torture
is
wrong no matter what the circumstances.
Dr. Rothstein spoke and had a
discussion following his presentation.
